Updated: RIM, what are we going to do with you??

by on July 27, 2010

Today more pictures of the new OS for Research In Motions’ popular Blackberry smart phones emerged.  OS6 is supposed to be the savior for the Canadian company as it will allow the company to somewhat compete with the likes of Android 2.2 or iOS 4.  RIM has continued to be criticized for the lack of anything even close to revolutionary for their devices in the past few years from angry consumers, prosumers and bloggers alike.

From the looks of the new software, it looks like RIM could have a potential winner on their hands with one tiny problem.  Coming out with a new device is all well and good, especially one that looks as good as the Torch does, but releasing a new operating system at the same time? Not sure that is such a good idea, remember all the problems that RIM had with the Storm 9500?  At launch, the screen wasn’t the only thing that early adopters had to get used to, but also having to navigate the never-before touch capable operating system, was no small feat.

How will the device run on a phone that is not touch screen capable?  Also, many rumors have been floating around about the amount of RAM that needs to be in the phone to sufficently support OS6, is it 256 or 512? If it is the later, then there is only one device on the market which currently has this specification, the Bold 9650.  Hopefully, this is not the case as there would be a lot of angry consumers that will need to purchase new devices which could seemingly be just a slight upgrade to a phone they currently have (see 9780, 8520/8530)

The 9800 is rumored to have, HSDPA 3.6 Mbps (although this seems to be wrong as AT&T is currently building up their 7.2Mbps network), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, 4GB internal memory w/ external up to 16GB capable.  The device is also rumored to have a full-qwerty keyboard and optical trackpad as you can see from the pictures.  The kicker on the phone that really no one has confirmed is what kind of a touch screen will be on the phone as well.  Will it be the somewhat better screen that is currently on the Storm 2 (9550)? Will it be something completely different that no one has ever seen before, finally the revolutionary piece to keep all of you Blackberry lovers coming back for more? Or, as many seem to now expect, will it be the same old screen that is seen on so many touch screen devices that are out in the market already? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, RIM needs to get their act together and deliver something extraordinary.  I mean let’s face it, we all know that they can’t spin news as good as the boys in Cupertino.

Update: The 9800 and 9670 now has some company, by way of the newly discovered 9780 on the interwebz with a video posted by the guys over @ www.Drifter.com With this new video now showing that the device will run OS6, does that mean the proverbial death to the 9700? Will it not get the update to the new OS? Only time will tell, and hopefully we find out sooner rather than later, but I know I won’t be the only Blackberry user to be really upset if this happens.
