Updated: Blackberry Torch (9800) gets official

by on August 3, 2010

Well it looks like AT&T was a little impatient in waiting to announce the newest smart phone from Canadian manufacturer Research in Motion.  The Blackberry 9800 went live on the carrier’s website a little bit early today before the ATT/RIM event even started.  Some newly found details of the device include: 3.2in (480×360) display w/ slide-out QWERTY keyboard and optical track pad, web-kit browser capabilities, Blackberry OS6, 5MP camera on the back (none on the front), 802.11 B/G/N capable wi-fi and some pretty nice memory options; 512 MB RAM + 512 MB Flash + 4 GB Flash + 4 GB MicroSD.

So what do you think of this new venture by RIM?  Do you think it will be a hit or do you think it will face similar issues that the Blackberry Storm had when it was first released?

Update: The Torch will be exclusively on AT&T and will be released on August 12th, for the not so bad price tag of $199.99.  Of course to get this price, you have to sign the customary 2-year contract for either a new customer or be eligible for an upgrade.  The phone will be available at AT&T company owned retail stores and online at, as well as Best Buy, Wal-Mart and RadioShack stores.  As always with any AT&T Smartphone, the device will require either a $15/mo 200mb data plan or $25/mo 2GB data plan.

Update 2: The Torch will launch with OS6 as will other upcoming Blackberry devices.  The Pearl 3G, Bold 9650, Bold 9700 will also all get an update to the new operating system.  However, as per usual, there was no release date for the other devices.  RIM only said that the OS will be “Subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead.”
